A very serious mistake was made on a former occasion and frequently complained of by which the Colony suffered heavy losses. The articles, if forwarded by the regular line of Steamers from Liverpool or London, ought to arrive here long before the commencement of the Winter.

The enclosed Requisition contains an item of an unusual character, viz: 200 Snider Breech loading Carbines and bayonets, to replace a portion of the arms at present in possession of the Police. These arms must gradually be replaced, as being now, through use, nearly worn out; and it is obvious that, if replaced by fresh ones, it is on all accounts desirable to procure the most effective weapon.

There can be no doubt that when so large an expenditure is incurred as in this Colony for the maintenance of the Police Force it would be unwise not to render each Member of that Force as effective as possible, especially as it might be called upon at any moment to assist in actual military duties of attack & defence. It is an advantage that at least a portion of the Police Force should be able to assist
